Carpet water extraction removes water from both the carpet and the pad underneath using truck mounted extractors and weighted extraction tools, then dries the floor with air movers and dehumidifiers. The pad holds most of the water, so surface drying alone leaves it trapped.
Wall to wall carpet over a concrete slab is common in DeSoto bedrooms, living rooms and hallways. When water reaches it, the carpet face can feel nearly dry within hours while the pad and the tack strip along the walls stay soaked.
That hidden water is what causes the smell, the ripples and the stains a week later. Extracting both layers in the first day is the difference between drying the carpet in place and tearing it out.
Wet carpet right now?
- Stop the source and keep people off the wet area.
- Lift furniture legs onto foil or plastic so stains do not transfer.
- Remove area rugs from the wet carpet so both can dry.
- Do not use a household vacuum or steam cleaner.
- Call for extraction the same day.
How do you know water is under the carpet?
- The carpet squishes, feels cold or looks darker along a wall
- Baseboards are damp or the paint above them is bubbling
- A musty smell in one room, especially after a leak nearby
- Ripples or soft spots that were not there before
- Rust colored or brown stains appearing as the carpet dries
Can this carpet be saved? It depends on three things
| Water source | Carpet | Pad |
|---|---|---|
| Clean (supply line, water heater, ice maker) and extracted within about 24 hours | Usually saved | Often saved |
| Clean water left 2 days or more | Often saved if no delamination | Usually replaced |
| Gray (washing machine drain, dishwasher, AC condensate) | Sometimes saved after cleaning | Replaced |
| Black (sewage, toilet waste, storm runoff) | Removed | Removed |
The third factor is the carpet itself. Delamination, shrinking and seams that have pulled apart all push toward replacement. A crew should check the backing before promising the carpet will lie flat again.
How does carpet water extraction work?
Truck mounted extraction
A vacuum unit on the truck runs a hose into the house and pulls bulk water from the carpet surface. For upstairs rooms and apartments, portable extractors do the same job.
Weighted extraction
This is the step that saves carpet. The technician stands or rides on a weighted extraction head that compresses the carpet and pad together and pulls the water out of both. Several slow passes remove water that ordinary wands leave behind.
Floating the carpet
With clean water, the carpet is often lifted at a corner and air is blown underneath so it floats above the pad and slab. This dries both sides at once without pulling the carpet off the tack strip permanently.
Drying and readings
Air movers and dehumidifiers run until readings in the carpet, pad and slab surface match a dry room. Then the carpet is re stretched and seams checked.
What can you safely do yourself?
- Blot small, clean spills with towels and walk on them to press water out
- Run the AC to keep indoor humidity down
- Move cushions, pillows and fabric items off the floor
- Keep pets off wet carpet, especially after gray or black water
What not to do
Do not pull up carpet yourself; the tack strip is sharp and stretching it back is a skilled job. Do not use a steam cleaner on wet carpet, which adds water and heat. Do not keep carpet that touched sewage.
How long does wet carpet take to dry?
After good extraction, most carpet and pad dry in two to four days with proper equipment. The slab under it can take longer, especially in a humid North Texas spring. The crew should not re stretch or reinstall until readings say the floor is dry.
What affects the cost?
Square footage, water category, whether the pad is replaced, furniture moving and drying days. Saving carpet in place is almost always cheaper than replacing it. See the water extraction cost guide for ranges.
Does insurance cover wet carpet?
If the water came from a covered sudden event, such as a burst pipe or failed water heater, extraction and drying are commonly covered, and replacement is covered when the carpet cannot be saved. Water from outside flooding is usually a flood insurance matter. Photograph the carpet and keep a sample if it is removed.

Wet carpet questions
Can wet carpet be saved?
Often, yes, if the water was clean and it is extracted within the first day or so. Carpet soaked by gray water can sometimes be cleaned and saved, but the pad is usually replaced. Carpet soaked by sewage or storm water should be removed.
Does the carpet pad always have to be replaced?
Not always with clean water caught early, because weighted extraction can dry it in place. Pad acts like a sponge and is cheap compared with carpet, so it is commonly replaced after gray water, after long exposure, or whenever odor remains.
Is a rental carpet shampooer enough?
No. Rental machines are built to clean, not to extract a flood. They pull a little water from the carpet face and almost none from the pad. Truck mounted and weighted extraction remove many times more water.
What is carpet delamination?
Carpet has a primary and secondary backing glued together. When it stays wet too long, the glue fails and the layers separate, causing bubbles and ripples that do not lie flat again. Delaminated carpet usually has to be replaced.
When can I put furniture back on the carpet?
Only after moisture readings show the carpet and pad are dry, typically after three to five days of drying. Use foam blocks or foil squares under wood and metal legs during drying to prevent rust and stain transfer.
Why does my carpet smell after it dried?
A musty smell usually means the pad or the slab under it never fully dried, or the water was not clean. Surface drying is not the same as dry. Readings will show if moisture is still trapped below.
