Hardwood floor water extraction DeSoto TX: saving wood takes patience

Hardwood floor water extraction removes water from the surface, seams and underside of wood flooring, then dries the boards slowly with drying mats, dehumidifiers and daily moisture readings. The goal is to bring the wood back to its normal moisture level before cupping becomes permanent.

Wood absorbs water through its seams and edges and swells. In DeSoto, most wood floors sit on a concrete slab, either glued down or floating over a pad, so water trapped between the wood and the slab has nowhere to go.

The first day matters most. Every hour that water sits on or under the boards pushes more moisture into the wood and raises the chance of replacement.

What happens to wet wood floors?

SignWhat it means
Dark stains at seamsWater has entered between boards
Cupping (edges up)Underside wetter than the top; often recoverable with drying
Crowning (center up)Often from sanding too early or top side moisture
Buckling (boards lift off the floor)Severe swelling; replacement is likely
Black or gray stainingLong exposure or contaminated water

Can this floor be saved?

  • Solid hardwood, clean water, quick response: good chance
  • Engineered hardwood: depends on the core; plywood cores do better than fiberboard
  • Laminate: fiberboard core swells permanently; usually replaced
  • Any floor with sewage or flood water: removed
  • Buckled floors: usually replaced

How does hardwood floor water extraction work?

Surface extraction

Water is pulled from the surface and seams with extraction wands designed for hard floors.

Drying mats

Panels are laid on the floor and connected to a vacuum system that draws moisture up through the boards and from the gap between wood and slab.

Controlled environment

Dehumidifiers lower the humidity in a closed room. Drying too fast can split and check the wood, so the pace is controlled and adjusted daily.

Readings against a baseline

Readings are taken on unaffected wood in the same house as the target. The floor is dry when the wet areas match it, not when it looks flat.

If the water came from under the slab, see slab leak water extraction; the slab must dry too.

After drying: refinish, repair or replace

Once dry, many cupped floors flatten partly or fully. A flooring contractor then decides whether to refinish, replace individual boards or replace the area. Waiting a few weeks after drying before sanding helps avoid crowning.

What affects the cost?

Area, wood type, how long it was wet and how many days of mat drying are needed. Wood floor drying often runs longer than carpet. See the cost guide.

Hardwood floor water questions

Can water damaged hardwood floors be saved?

Often, if the water was clean, extraction happened quickly and the wood is dried slowly with specialized equipment. Floors soaked by sewage or flood water, or left wet for days, are more likely to need replacement.

What is the difference between cupping and crowning?

Cupping is when board edges rise higher than the centers because the bottom of the board is wetter than the top. Crowning is the opposite, with centers higher, and often happens when a cupped floor is sanded before it fully dries.

How long does hardwood take to dry?

Usually one to three weeks, sometimes longer, depending on species, thickness, finish and how wet the slab or subfloor is. Drying too fast can crack boards, so the process is controlled and measured.

When can a cupped floor be sanded and refinished?

Only after moisture readings match unaffected wood in the same house and the floor has had time to settle. Many flooring pros wait several weeks. Sanding too soon is a common cause of crowning.

Is laminate the same as hardwood after water damage?

No. Laminate has a fiberboard core that swells permanently when wet and usually has to be replaced. Engineered hardwood falls in between and depends on the core and how it was installed.

Will insurance replace my whole floor if only part got wet?

Policies typically pay to repair or replace the damaged area with like kind and quality. Matching is a common dispute when the old flooring is discontinued. Ask the adjuster how matching is handled under your policy.
